Our Story
History
The soil and climate in the Champlain Islands are unique for apple production, yielding apples with superior flavor. Our South Hero land has been producing apples for over 100 years.
It has been owned by the Hackett family since 1967. Four generations of family now help with the many year-round chores.
Today
The fine Vermont products at Hackett's Orchard are produced on land conserved through the South Hero and Vermont Land Trusts. Our 50 acre farm enjoys visits from people around the country as well as island residents.
Our Community
We take pride in the South Hero community, sponsoring an annual Easter Egg Hunt, enjoyed by children. We are a featured stop for bicyclist who take the Local Motion bike ferry. We participate in many other events held in the Champlain Islands throughout the year. On a regular basis during the growing season, we supply food to the Grand Isle Food Shelf and Vermont Foodbank and participate in the Food for Thought program which provides meals in the summer for children who normally depend on school lunch programs.
The beauty and charm of the Champlain Islands, which attracted the hard working early Island settlers has not diminished over the centuries. This is a special place, filled with distant mountain views, spectacular sunsets, rural scenes and bountiful farm orchards.
